Caucus to Convention Calendar Explained
The Republican Party’s Caucus-to-Convention process is held in even-numbered years and serves as the foundation of grassroots participation in Iowa politics. Beginning with local precinct caucuses and continuing through county, district, and state conventions, this process allows party members to shape the platform, select delegates, and help choose the candidates who will represent Republican values at every level of government. The Party's National Convention is held every ahead of the Presidential Election every four years.
1. Precinct Caucuses
Held early in the election year, precinct caucuses are local meetings where registered party members gather to discuss issues, propose platform ideas, and elect delegates to the county convention. Participants may also elect precinct officers who represent their area on the county central committee.
4. District Convention
Delegates from each county within the congressional or legislative district meet to nominate district-level candidates (such as U.S. House or state legislative seats, depending on the cycle) and elect members to the district standing committees. They may also pass resolutions and discuss regional issues.
National Convention (Presidential Election Years Only)
In presidential election years, Iowa’s national delegates attend the Republican National Convention to officially nominate the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates and adopt the national platform.
2. County Convention
Delegates chosen at the caucuses meet at the county convention to shape the local party platform, nominate candidates for county offices, and elect delegates to the district and state conventions. This event is where grassroots priorities start to move up the party structure.

5. State Standing Committees
These committees manage the ongoing business of the Republican Party of Iowa, guiding policy, supporting county and district organizations, and maintaining year-round operations.
3. District Standing Committees
These committees oversee party activity within each district—coordinating outreach, supporting candidates, and ensuring local voices are represented at the state level.
6. State Convention
Delegates from across Iowa gather to finalize the state party platform, elect state party officers and national convention delegates, and nominate candidates for statewide offices. It’s the culminating event where the party’s direction and leadership for the next election cycle are set.
